Ben Etherington

Ben Etherington

Bassoonist

I am now at Kings College, Cambridge, having won a General Sir John Monash Award in 2005.

I completed Honours in both Musicology and English at The University of Western Australia, winning the 2004 Gladys Wade prize for the best Honours student in English, the UWA Graduates Prize, the Katherine Moss Prize in English and the Lady Callaway Medal for Music.

A third generation bassoonist, I have played with WASO and the WA Youth Orchestra. I have attended master classes with Klaus Thunermann, one of the world's premier bassoonists. I have also composed, as well as playing both piano and bass guitar.

I found I had the ability to transfer a sense of being a performer to my academic work. I could summon the same intensity that you have in an orchestral performance and put that into a written paper.

BI am on track to achieve my professional goal to contribute to Australian artistic and intellectual life as a leading English and Musicological scholar, musical performer and educator.
